Our Story

Social Value International is the global network focused on social impact and social value. Our members share a common goal: to change the way society accounts for value. All too often key decisions about resources and policies are made using a limited economic concept of value, which fails to consider important effects on people and the environment. As the gap between rich and poor increases and the effects of climate change become more apparent, our work has never been more urgent. Social Value International works with our members to embed core principles for social value measurement and analysis, to refine and share practice, and to build a powerful movement of like-minded people to influence policy. This pioneering community contains members from 45 countries, drawn from a huge range of different sectors and disciplines. Our goal at Social Value International is to support, connect, and represent our members through training, knowledge-sharing and networking. Social Value International is much more than a professional network. Together, we are building a movement for change.

Our People

Ben Carpenter,
CEO

Ben Carpenter is the chief executive of Social Value International leading a global network of practitioners to develop principles and standards for social value accounting. Prior to becoming CEO, Ben led Social Value UK; developing the organisational membership, the assurance and accreditation services and the global value exchange. Ben has led pioneering IMM projects with the United Nations Development Program, the OECD, Impact Management Project and World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Ben co-authored the Maximise your Impact Guide, The BS8950 Guide to enhancing Social Value and a chapter on Assurance for Generation Impact. Ben’s background in asset management, the built environment and social housing and homelessness affords him experience that spans sectors and an in-depth knowledge of Social Value accounting.

Dr. Adam Richards, Director of Impact

Adam has worked in the social value and impact management space for 15 years. He completed his PhD in 2010 on how SROI can assist the legitimacy of social enterprises and lectured in UK universities for over 10 years before leaving to work more directly with organisations that aim to change how decisions are made. More recently, he led a team within Mantell Gwynedd to develop the use of social value in the Welsh third-sector infrastructure, helping to embed necessary skills across North Wales and secure substantial Big Lottery funding. As an Accredited Practitioner, he also worked for Social Value UK for over 4 years and was international training and projects manager. During this time, he successfully completed projects for partners including the British Council, the European Commission and the Greek government. He is also an Accredited Trainer and has supported hundreds of social enterprises, impact investors, SME and corporate organisations, academics, and intermediaries around the world to fulfil their potential to maximise the impacts of their work. Adam’s role in SVI is to ensure that networks and members globally are equipped and supported to create as much impact as possible – working with global partners to develop and share the best-practice standards and the Principles of Social Value.

Rebecca Harvey ,
Membership and Networks Manager

Becca Harvey is the Membership and Networks Manager for Social Value International. Becca's role in SVI is to work collaboratively with members and affiliated networks to support the global uptake of the Principles of Social Value to help us realise our mission. She oversees all membership services, Social Value International events (including the Social Value Matters conference series) and the development of country and regional networks. Before joining Social Value International, Becca was the Membership Manager at Social Value UK driving real value for members from across the UK. She has previously worked on gender empowerment projects in India and Uganda, as well as within Children's Health and Environmental Protection in the UK and New Zealand. Becca holds a BA in Geography from The University of Southampton, and an MSc in Development Studies from SOAS.

David Thomas ,
Communications and Campaigns Manager

David Thomas is Communications and Campaigns Manager for Social Value International and Social Value UK. David manages all press, articles, blogs, web content, newsletters and promotional materials for Social Value International. David works alongside partner organisations and Social Value Networks worldwide to build a cohesive and powerful social value movement. David is our lead contact on the How Do Companies Act campaign, looking to reform the way business works on a global scale. David has previously worked in in communications and PR for the social sector, and as a journalist and photographer. He holds an LLB in Law with Accounting and Finance from the University of Liverpool.
