Social Value Case Studies (Case Studies for Change)

About the Social Value Case Studies for Change Series

Social Value International works with our members to embed core principles for social value measurement and analysis, to refine and share practice, and to build a powerful movement of like-minded people and organisations.

Across the world, our members are applying The Principles and helping to mainstream social value; using exciting methods to maximise the social value created for the benefit of people and the planet.

The sessions within this series are designed to enable members to share, and learn from, specific case studies of how the Principles of Social Value have been applied/embedded. Through sharing specific examples of how social value measurement and management has been applied, we hope that attendees will be able to apply these learnings to their own organisations and over time, this will lead to increased social value and IMM.

He has a BS in mechanical engineering and an MBA degree. He worked as a corporate finance/business development professional across Turkey and Eastern Europe for 18 years. He is proud of running marathons, ultra-marathons and likes to attend open water swimming races.

Mr. Onur is also a social entrepreneur and an Ashoka Fellow since 2014. He co-founded Adım Adım (www.adimadim.org) as an “umbrella” initiative in 2007, with a vision to become a model social organisation, enabling individuals and organizations to donate to NGOs through organized sports activities and to act as an incubator for charity running. Also he co-founded Açık Açık to increase the transparency and accountability among NGO’s in Turkey. Mr. Onur is a member of the Board of Greenpace Mediterranean and a member of Organization Commitee of Olympic Games as well.

İstanbul Sports Events and Management Trade Inc. (Sport Istanbul) was established in 1989 as a subsidiary company of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality. It has prioritized the use of sports facilities and involvement in sports activities to strengthen the physical and mental health, and improve abilities of the people of İstanbul.

With the aim of increasing wellbeing and quality of social life, Spor İstanbul offers opportunities for the residents to take part in regular and conscious sports at a variety of sports facilities. In addition, it provides sports services for children and adults with disabilities to engage them in physical activity to increase their wellbeing. They prioritise services for grassroots rather than professional athletes.

In 2022 Spor Istanbul commissioned its first SROI to understand the changes different people and organisations experience as a result of its activities and inform decisions in a better way to optimise the value it creates for all stakeholders. The resulting SROI ratio was quite high, but did it mean that the outcomes and impact for stakeholders could not be improved? In the case study session Ceyda Ozgun and Renay Onur will focus on two key points:

  1. why it is important to devote time to stakeholder involvement

  2. how Spor Istanbul used the SROI findings to optimise outcomes and impact for its various stakeholders.

This case study therefore will focus on Social Value Principle 1 and Principle 8.
