True & Fair - Members Info Event
As the world grapples with existential challenges such as climate change and rising social inequalities, there's a noticeable shift in the definition of 'good' or 'sustainable' business performance, altering the landscape of business, investment, and consumer decision-making processes.
The last few years have seen an explosion of sustainability reporting initiatives, yet this information is treated differently to financial information and does not influence these decisions as much as is needed or wanted.
In 2024 Social Value International (SVI) launched the True and Fair project that aims to accelerate the integration of sustainability information into financial statements and ultimately accelerate the transition to a more sustainable world
This session aims to provides an update on the progress of the campaign so far including a breakdown of the legal opinion (published in the UK) on the requirement for company directors to produce accounts that are true and fair. Additionally, it will illustrate practical implications of this opinion and outline SVI's future ambitions for the project, inviting attendees to engage actively.
About the speakers:
Ben Carpenter, SVI CEO
Ben serves as the CEO of Social Value International, the global network with a mission to change the way society accounts for value. Ben leads the strategic direction for the network including engagement with other sustainability standard setters. Ben has played a pivotal role in spearheading the ‘true and fair’ campaign, advocating companies to include sustainability disclosures in their audited financial statements.
Jeremy Nicholls, Assurance Framework Lead for SDG Impact Standards at UNDP
Jeremy currently leads the assurance framework for the UNDP's SDG Impact Standards, aimed at aiding organizations committed to sustainable practices. His career has seen a transition from accounting to various roles in regeneration, social enterprise, and sustainability, ultimately leading him back to auditing and accountancy fundamentals. He was one of the founders, and then CEO until 2018, of Social Value International and is an ambassador for the Capitals Coalition (a global collaboration to integrate sustainability into business decision making) and a non-executive director of the FRC Group, a social enterprise in Liverpool.

This session is for anyone interested in SVI’s mission to change the way the world accounts for value. Specifically, it explores the legal duties and powers held by company directors with respect to approving accounts and integrating sustainability into business decision making.
